Trauma & the Great Wealth Transfer — Financial Adviser AU CPD

The Great Wealth Transfer is more than a technical movement of assets. This course treats inheritance as an emotional, relational and physiological transition that can activate grief, family history, shame, conflict, vulnerability and changes in identity — and equips advisers to manage the human transition surrounding the financial transfer.

Who this course is for

This is for you if

  • You advise clients who are inheriting, gifting or transferring wealth between generations
  • You work with older clients making decisions about estate, succession or aged care
  • You sit in family meetings where different generations want different things
  • You have watched a technically sound recommendation stall because of grief or family history
  • You want a defensible process for capacity, consent and undue influence
  • You advise on family businesses, blended families or intergenerational succession
  • You want CPD that counts towards both client care and ethics

Not for you if

  • You are looking for estate-planning tax or legal technical content
  • You want therapy training rather than adviser-scope practice skills

What you'll be able to do

Recognise trauma, grief and family history in wealth decisions

Understand how loss, deprivation, financial control and unfinished relationships shape how clients respond to an inheritance or a transfer.

Read capacity, not just competence

Identify nervous-system responses that reduce a client's ability to take in information, weigh options and make decisions they can stand behind.

Work with the family system, not around it

Recognise the roles, loyalties and power dynamics that surface around inheritance, and avoid becoming triangulated into them.

Facilitate safer intergenerational conversations

Prepare clients for family meetings, clarify who the client is, and make sure quieter family members keep a voice.

Respond to coercion, exploitation and scam risk

Distinguish an unwise decision from a coerced one, document observations rather than assumptions, and know when to pause, consult, escalate or refer.

Apply the GIFT practice framework

Ground before goals, identify history and power, facilitate voice and choice, and track capacity, risk and next steps.

Manage the human transition around the financial transfer

The Great Wealth Transfer is usually discussed in terms of economic scale, business opportunity and technical complexity. Yet every transfer also carries a human story. Clients may be receiving wealth while grieving a death, confronting unresolved family relationships or experiencing a profound disruption to their sense of identity.

Older clients may be facing questions of ageing, mortality, fairness, control and trust. Advisers can find themselves inside a family system where different generations hold very different expectations about money, responsibility and entitlement.

The adviser's task is not to remove every difficult emotion from wealth transfer. It is to create a process in which emotion, grief and family complexity do not undermine understanding, consent or client agency.

What the course gives you

  • A capacity-based way to read client engagement in high-stakes meetings
  • Language that supports decision-making without applying pressure
  • A clear escalation and referral path for coercion and exploitation concerns
  • The GIFT framework for before, during and after wealth-transfer conversations
  • A protocol you can embed across your practice
